Re: Some '87 Help Please - Heads up Dain & Jessica |
Dear micah6vs8 (and Dain & Jessica wherever you might be)
1987 wasn't maybe the best year of the 80's, but it's still full of good shows. I'm currently working my way through a top ten list for this "transition year". Yes in a way 1987 was the dividing line between the early 80's and the later period (Jerry's coma kinda forces a divide there).
But 1987 gets emotional points from me, being the year of Jerry's return, and the spirit of the band and the fans was very strong then. What many of the sets lack in perfection or longer jams, they make up for with sheer passion.
May I recommend -
9/18/87 (of course)
5/2/87
7/8/87 (I also think this is a winner, micah6vs8)
6/20/87
and I'm in the process of reviewing 4/2/87 as a possible top ten. Also maybe 12/27.
enjoy the good vibes of 87,
Dr. Flashback ;-)

Nice to hear from the Doctor. I have a lot from 87 and have really enjoyed parts of the year.
Being an Eastcoaster I can vouch for the Hampton shows, Roanoke and Captial Center. All were wonderful shows with lots of energy.
Lots to love in '87.
Lots to love in '72 too, but I'm just sayin'

Re: Some '87 Help Please - Heads up Dain & Jessica |
I know , but that is where they are now , that's their starting point . As I said to both of them ( wonderful smiles , wonderful people ) I'm more a '68 , '69 , '90 head - but that's not their request . I do not often listen to '87 hence the need of some help . Thanks everyone
BTW dmax , as we were leaving Coney Island last night , what do I hear , the Veneta '72 Bird Song . A cool , clear drink of water .

Both hartford shows in the Spring as well as the last night at the Centrum are very well played shows.
Also try the Providence run in the fall

Re: Some '87 Help Please - Heads up Dain & Jessica |
I consider much of '87 to be better than the often praised 89-91 Dead. In my opinion, Spring and Summer '87 are better than the fall. 9/18/87 stands out from the fall mostly because of the great "Dew" but in my comparison listening, most the shows in the Spring tour and into June and July, pound for pound, are as good or better than 9/18. I'd start with Hartford 3/26 and listen to every show through 4/4 -- which includes the Spectrum and Centrum. They are all great -- a great UJB>Dew in Hartford. As good a "Shakedown" in Philly as any in the 80s. Great shows each night in Worcester -- including the last "Comes a Time" (4/4) essentially of the 80s.
The tour has the feeling of a renewal and reenergizing after the '86 breakdown and hiatus. There ia s minimum of things that to me plague the later 80s -- few cheesy Brent numbers, no guitar effects etc.... Like any Deadhead, we have our biases. I think Spring '87 is one of those sometimes overlooked periods where the band sparkles night after night.
That said, I agree, there are great shows all year long, but they tend to be fewer and farther between as the year progresses. See if you agree that these Spring shows stack up very favorably to the best of the fall '87 -- if not outperform them.

Only show I can recommend from 87' was 8-15- Town Park.
The Brokedown from 8-16 was classic but not good-lol-- "this is all fucked up"
